Sacha Goldberger - Super Flemish

Tim Burton - Individual Style

Album Covers - Mash-Up

My first initial inspiration came from artist Sacha Goldberger, whom mashed up two unlikely elements to create an innovate piece of work. The series of images reflect both popular American culture and 17th century style paintings all merged into one. Goldberger took iconic sci-fi characters and remixed them into noble persons of the 17th century, individually they both have an influence on society, but when represented together in ‘Super Flemish’ there is an undeniable power they give off. Therefore, this aura I read from the collection and Goldberger encouraged me to create a series of images with two unlikely elements, which would have such effect on the consumer as much as I did when I saw ‘Super Flemish’.

Another artist that inspired me highly was film director, Tim Burton. What I gained from Burton is that he is an individual; he has his own unique style, which is reflected, through his films. So, when an audience watches one of his movies they recognise that it is a Tim Burton film. However, Burton’s style is more exaggerated and dramatic, which through creating colourful sets and impressive costumes a theatrical feel is introduced into his movies. But for my images, I didn’t want to create such thrilling content, I wanted them to be clean and allow the consumer to think about what is being presented.  Yet, I do take note of how he is an individual and is recognised through his style of work.

What exactly got me into the idea of mashing up album covers; well it was the digital agency aptitude, which created some thought-provoking images to show their vision of the truth behind album covers. For instances, on the Abbey Road album by the Beatles, it shows them crossing route 66 and Nirvana’s, Nevermind cover shows the baby swimming with a shark and dolphin. This influenced me greatly when I saw the images, because music is apart of everyone’s lives and is continuously used to reflect the mood of people. So, this drove me to change album covers myself and get others to see famous albums in a different light. Hopefully.
